About

POETRY BONES is an international group of writers, turning up weekly for live, online writing practice.  After the Natalie Goldberg Writing Down the Bones method, our sessions include "keep your hand moving" timed writings.  The first prompt, a free write, has poets mining their personal experience and memory for the story and details.  The second prompt moves the free write toward poetry -- an innovative approach to create the "bones" or basic framework for a new original poem, in a timed challenge.

As the writing practice evolves we continue to explore a variety of writing practice structures, using mentor poems as prompts, art as prompts, writing-from-place challenges, dance and movement prompts, and brief Somatics meditations before writing. The aim is always to write write write--to establish a writing practice that continues to challenge and to generate writing.

POETRY BONES is a generative writing practice and incorporates small group read-alouds and whole group discussions of example poems and of the writing process before closing the writing-practice session.  Writers use the rest of the week to develop the poem and bring it to a future meeting for another reading.

POETRY BONES BLOG warehouses the materials and participants' inspiration from those live writing sessions. You can use the site however you like to fuel your own writing practice.  If you are compelled to leave comments, please be inclusive, reflective, and edifying.

Whatever your bent, this writing practice can
